Vaccine Development & Innovation

Impact on Global Polio Eradication

FIDEC’s contributions to global polio eradication continue to drive meaningful impact. The novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2), codeveloped with global partners, is now the preferred vaccine for controlling circulating vaccine derived poliovirus type 2 outbreaks. Millions of doses have been administered, and in late 2023 the WHO granted the vaccine pre-qualification status.

Our collaboration with icddr,b in Bangladesh has expanded FIDEC’s clinical research into Asia. The IPV005 study, involving more than 500 infants, advanced understanding of mucosal immunity in polio control, and a new study focused on preventing type 2 polio in newborns is now underway—reinforcing FIDEC’s commitment to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

Recognition for Innovation

FIDEC was honored with the 2024 Innovating for Impact Partnership Award from the Global Health Technologies Coalition (GHTC) in recognition of its contribution to the research and development of the novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2).

Developed through a global partnership led by PATH, nOPV2 became the first vaccine authorized by the WHO for emergency use and has since helped reduce outbreaks of circulating vaccinederived poliovirus type 2, with more than one billion doses delivered worldwide.

Institutional Recognition

In October 2022, FIDEC received formal recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO) for its invaluable contribution to the development and global rollout of the novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2). In a letter addressed to FIDEC, WHO DirectorGeneral Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlighted the impact of nOPV2 in controlling outbreaks of circulating vaccinederived poliovirus type 2 and acknowledged FIDEC’s role in advancing a more sustainable path toward polio eradication.
